A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) works by optimising energy usage. Users can purchase electricity and store it in the BESS when prices are cheap. Then, during peak times, the stored energy can be discharged to offset energy costs, lower costs, or improve sustainability.
Battery storage plants, also known as battery energy storage systems (BESS), are a way to stockpile energy from renewable sources and release it when needed.
BESS sites can be also designed with safety features, such as fire suppression systems, to ensure their safety. There is no reliable, publicly accessible record of the number of BESS fires that have occurred in the UK or elsewhere.
The International Fire Code (IFC) published its most robust ESS safety requirements in the most recent 2021 edition. By far the most dominant battery type installed in an energy storage system is lithium-ion, which brings with it particular fire risks.
Fire services are not currently statutory consultees of BESS developments in the UK. However, we are keen to engage with developers to improve the fire safety of the site, and to protect both firefighters and the community.
As mentioned earlier, certain BESS sites are – or should be – subject to environmental regulation already. The reason is that some BESS sites operate backup generators, emissions from which may be regulated, though not every operator is aware of this. Data centre operators found themselves in the same position a few years ago.
