1. Introduction The Nickel/metal hydride (Ni/MH) battery continued to be an important energy storage source in 2017.
The main concern with nickel–metal hydride batteries is that they are very expensive. NiMH batteries have higher power and energy density and a much longer life cycle compared to lead-acid batteries. They are also completely safe and their power output is not affected by the battery state of charge.
Nickel–metal hydride batteries have a cycle life performance of > 1000 cycles. In the last two decades, nickel–metal hydride batteries have been used as a high power source in several commercial hybrid vehicles such as Honda Insight and Toyota Prius.
Nickel–metal hydride batteries are similar to NiCd batteries in most aspects of their design and manufacturing processes. The main difference is in the replacement of the negative cadmium-based electrode with an electrode using a hydrogen storing metal alloy.
Nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries have demonstrated key technology advantages for applications in new-energy vehicles, while the main challenge derives from the insufficient cycle lives (about 500 cycles) of their negative electrode materials—hydrogen storage alloys. As a result, progress in their devel
Nickel–metal hydride batteries are better than nickel–cadmium batteries for electric car applications. They store more energy and do not have oxide properties, offering better performance.

A nickel–metal hydride battery (NiMH or Ni–MH) is a type of rechargeable battery. The chemical reaction at the positive electrode is similar to that of the nickel–cadmium cell (NiCd), with both using nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH). However, the negative electrodes use a hydrogen-absorbing alloy instead of cadmium. NiMH batteries can have two to three times the capacity of NiCd bat…
