China has proposed a series of policies to increase the proportion of installed power capacity from non-fossil energy sources and promote the transformation of its energy structure. For example, the 13th Five-Year Plan for Power Development set a target of 39% of the installed capacity of non-fossil energy by 2020.
In addition, China's RE supply and load areas are inversely distributed. The large-scale transmission capacity of the power grid directly affects the real-time consumption of RE, and more energy storage capacity is required to match the large transmission capacity.
To implement these policies, China must determine a suitable energy storage configuration capacity in a step-by-step and zonal manner to achieve high RE penetration and ensure a stable power supply in the power system.
4.3.4. Power generation capacity China's cumulative installed power generation capacity is expected to increase from 2231.6 GW in 2020 to 3450.5 GW (L-S-Mi) to 4877.1 GW (H-B-Mi) by 2035 (Fig. 8). The installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation is projected to grow the fastest.
From 2020 to 2035, the cumulative power capacity of China's energy storage will increase by an average of 8.3% per year (cost preference, Pre-Co) to 28.6% (preference for peak-shaving and valley-filling effects of energy storage, Pre-Ef). Among them, lithium-ion batteries (Pre-Eq), VRB (Pre-Ef), and SC (Pre-Co) have the fastest growth rates.
The National Power System (NPS) indicates significant growth for non-fossil technologies in China's energy sector. According to the NPS, non-fossil technologies will account for 60% of installed capacity and approximately 50% of generation. Wind and solar PV will provide 21% of total generation. This aligns with China’s Document No. 9 reforms and provides a sense of where policy ambitions seem likely to take the energy sector.
