Ultra-high-voltage electricity transmission (UHV electricity transmission) has been used in China since 2009 to transmit both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) electricity over long distances separating China's energy resources and consumers.
The UHV grid will aid China's plan of electrification and decarbonization, and enable integration of renewable energy by removing the transmission bottleneck that is currently limiting expansions in wind and solar generation capacity whilst further developing the market for long-range electric vehicles in China.
The chapter discusses the assessment of energy storage technologies for smart grid applications. With appropriate power electronics interface and controllers, energy storage systems are capable of supplying the smart grid with both active and reactive power independently, simultaneously and very rapidly.
Energy storage system to support power grid operation ESS is gaining popularity for its ability to support the power grid via services such as energy arbitrage, peak shaving, spinning reserve, load following, voltage regulation, frequency regulation and black start.
ESS integration for smart grid advancement is a relatively new technology introduced in the latest decade. Besides understanding the technical aspect of this technology, its application's economic feasibility is also important to ensure the technology practicality.
