A multifrequency vibration-based micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) electromagnetic energy harvesting device was presented with a permanent magnet and a circular suspension structure on a MEMS EH chip. [ 76]
We start by providing an overview of four vibration-based energy harvesting mechanisms, including piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrostatic, and triboelectric energy harvesting. It is to be noted that frequency is most essential property of the vibration.
Autonomous systems require microscale energy harvesters, but thus far, MEMS vibration energy harvesters inadequately satisfy this need. Most MEMS devices are based on resonant structures, which inherently show high resonant frequency and narrow bandwidth.
Herein, we propose a MEMS multimodal vibration energy harvester that simultaneously lowers the resonant frequency to the ultralow-frequency level and broadens the bandwidth. This is achieved by using specifically cascaded flexible PDMS and “zigzag” silicon beams.
Energy harvesting devices can also be designed for a combination of vibration controls. In one of the energy harvesting systems, it was applied on the vehicle suspension acting as a controllable damper as well as an energy generator.
There have been some technologies to harvesting vibration energy such as electromagnetic (EM), 1,2 piezoelectric, 3,4 and electrostatic, 5,6 among which electromagnetic-vibration energy harvesters (EM-VEHs) have been the primary focus of research due to the relatively high power density and long lifetime.
