An Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) system is shown in Fig. 11.2. The Catalyst from Teradyne Inc. is an example of an ATE system, which is a mixed-signal tester used for production testing of devices like SoC, wireless, and RF. It is a generic tester customized to a particular Device Under Test (DUT) through the test program and a Device Interface Board (DIB).
During the production test stage, Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) is used to reduce the test times by automating as much of the test process as practical. The semiconductor testers used require both hardware and software parts in order to set-up and control the tester and test program execution.
While developing Test Program Sets (TPS), if existing ATE systems cannot meet the necessary requirements without inserting extra test devices or decreasing test coverage, then designing a new ATE can be seen inevitable.
