Die Spannung des Lithium-Ionen-Akkus sinkt während der Entladung zunächst recht schnell von der erreichten Ladeschlussspannung auf die Nennspannung (ca. 3,6 bis 3,7 V) ab, sinkt dann aber während eines langen Zeitraums kaum weiter ab. Erst kurz vor der vollständigen Entladung beginnt die Zellenspannung wieder stark zu sinken.
Das Lithium liegt im entladenen Zustand des Akkumulators in der positiven Elektrode weiterhin in Ionenform vor. Da die Affinität der Lithiumionen zum Material der positiven Elektrode größer ist als ihre Affinität zur negativen (Graphit-)Elektrode, wird beim Fließen von Lithiumionen von der negativen zur positiven Elektrode Energie freigesetzt.
